Overindulgence and glasses

Those who know me know that I am prone to a little overindulgence myself. I’m a little overweight, I’ve had my share of fun, and I’m very good at succumbing to temptation when it comes to books and gadgets (Charlie Stross calls this, “losing your saving throw vs. shiny”). However, as I was perusing the wares at the Kum & Go on the west side of Ames today while buying gas, I saw the most ridiculous indicator of something gone wrong with our culture of plenty. I saw a 100 oz. insulated mug!

Now everyone knows that the beverage of choice for those things is soda (pop). Holy crap! Who would ever need that much soda all at once? I can see how something like that can sneak up on you. Hey, a 12 oz. can is kind of small, I could really go for something bigger, voila, the 20 oz. is born (actually, if memory serves, the 16 oz. old glass bottles came long before this, and probably cans for all I know). One liter, two liters, and on and on. We also have the fountain wars. Cups have been getting bigger for a long time. Places like 7-11 proudly proclaim having fountain drinks with monikers like Big Gulp (at least they did back in the day).

Along the same lines…I saw a Smart Car in the parking lot at school today. I saw them all over the place a couple years ago when I was in Germany. They looked pretty small, even then. Jake has video of him comparing the length of a Smart Car to his wingspan, and they are within inches! In the parking lot next to all of those American cars, it looked absolutely dwarfish. Rather comical actually. I didn’t think to snap a pic.

Well, enough of that.

I’m getting some new glasses. I need a change, plus my old ones suck. The lenses pop out when a gentle breeze hits ‘em. Kevin and I went to Hy-Vee the other day and checked out frames. Here are the ones I ended up getting.

It was kind of fun looking at all the other glasses too. Here’s some of my favorites.

Old guy, pervy?
Wow, these make me look like an old guy, and maybe a bit pervy?

Well I think that’s enough for now. Ada agrees, thumbs up!

Thumbs up

Not my kid, but…

This isn’t my kid, but it’s still crazy-cute and funny as hell.

Swim meet

As promised, here is another post and before it’s been a month! These are movies from Edie’s swim meet on January 14th (yeah, I know it’s been more than a month). Edie is the second swimmer in the relay. There will probably be more later since next weekend is her conference meet.

It’s been a while

I’ve been putting off posting for a while for no good reason. Just lazy I guess. I’ve got a bunch of stuff that I’d like to put up so I’ll probably be tossing something out a little more often, at least for a while. In the mean time, here are a couple little video clips to wet your whistle.

Here is Ada (Dylan) playing the guitar and singing a song that she’s making up on the spot. Pure poetry. My favorite parts are the diva-esque way she makes everyone wait for her to finish her Gummy LifeSavers before starting and the awesome British Punk Rock thing her top lip does at the end. Enjoy.

And here is Edie playing around with her new camera trying to figure out if she wants to be like iCarly. The video and audio get out of sync and the audio is kind of quiet, so deal. I do like the whole disembodied face and arms thing. And if I do say so myself, she’s damn cute!

***Update: Holy crap, Vimeo is awesome! The original AVI of Edie’s movie had messed up audio/video syncing (thus the apology) and Vimeo fixed it automatically when it converted the file! Bravo.
